Interface Overview

Getting control of the Illustrator interface is vital as it has an unusual way of dealing with drawing and text.

  • Using the tools & panels
  • Customise the workspace
  • Controlling views, zoom & pan
  • Appreciating Outline Mode
  • Dealing with Swatches

Drawing basic shapes

Illustrator has multiple ways to create shapes which, when combined with other shapes

  • Creating independent text frames
  • Flowing pre-existing text into frames
  • Basic typography
  • Formatting paragraphs of text
  • Creating styles for paragraphs

Working with Type

Words are often at the centre of a piece of artwork and Illustrator has many typographic features that are useful. However it is not ideally suited to handling larger text flows - use InDesign.

  • Creating Type
  • Point Type and Area Type
  • Text Wraps
  • Shaping Type
  • Perspective on Type

Drawing Complex Shapes

Illustrator has some unusual methods for creating more complex artwork that are not very intuitive! The Graphic Styles Panel works closely with the Appearances Panel and is very useful.

  • Using the Pathfinder
  • Slicing and scissors
  • Working with Appearances
  • Graphic Styles
  • Illustrator filters

Using Layered artwork

As your artwork increases in complexity you'll find the Layers feature of Illustrator exceptionally useful. Individual layers can be locked, to prevent accidental selection, or hidden if your are producing multiple text versions

  • Creating layers
  • View/hide & Lock
  • Moving objects through layers
  • Creating graphs
  • Entering graph data

Final Output

Creating the right type of PDF is easy with Illustrator when you know what you are trying to achieve. Packaging allows you to collect all your files for an external print company but they often prefer a Print Ready PDF file.

  • Exporting & Saving
  • Preparing files for the Printers
  • PDF export for Print or Internet use
  • Saving for PowerPoint
